'Word On The Street: Coventry' Coventry is a fairly small city and easy to get around yet it is home to two Universities, Warwick being one of the country's top establishments... ... The Arts centre is the biggest venue of it's kind outside London. The city is set in glorious Warwickshire countryside, and the long, tree lined Kenilworth Road into the city centre has to be one of the most impressive city roads anywhere. Lots of money is being spent on the city centre - and a huge IKEA has opened and a new luxury hotel and apartment and shops will open soon in the Belgrade Theatre plaza. The Sky Dome offers city centre entertainment, including an ice rink and bars and clubs. The shopping centre is mainly pedestrianised but expanding at a fast rate...incorporating the old - medieval buildings sit alongside the more modern, and the two cathedrals are a minutes walk from the shops....the Cathedral quater being cobbled and containing a beautiful medieval Guildhouse. More traditional pubs abound and Earlsdon, a suburb not far fom the centre has become a popular eating place full of bars, restaurants and cafes. The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum has expanded and is an oasis of calm just off the main high street. The natives - Coventry Kids - are very open, warm and friendly. Factories have been replaced with Business and Science parks - there is lots of development going on - so the city is home to many professionals who have relocated here, and many of the thousands of students who study here stay on, giving the place a good social mix. Housing varies...from estates common to all large urban areas to terraces, character properties to large individual properties in exclusive neighbourhoods. It strikes me as being a very green place...and I think the council works hard to ensure Coventry is always recognised in the City in Bloom awards.
